This piece of informal revenge on the part of the soldiers was neatly dealt with by the Commander through the use of informal relationships backed by a threat of future formal action if things did not go the way that he wanted. He chose his medium for his message very well: he was able to send it unofficially through the interviewee, who was then able to broadcast it from his position as squadron barman.

Using the model, this incident can be described and analysed as follows:

The members of the squadron took informal action against an outsider who was making life difficult for them. They carried out an illegitimate secondary adjustment at dead of night by removing the cannon balls. However, the Commander British Forces cleverly used his relationship of informal access with the clerk to pass a message to the unknown cannon-ball removers. He reinforced his message by threatening use of the formal command structure if it was not heeded. The clerk then passed the message widely through the squadron using his central role as squadron barman and his network of friendship and association. The Commander’s ploy worked and the cannon balls reappeared without any formal action being necessary.
